To start off, what exactly is a vision statement? A vision statement is the goal your company has for the future and it helps you to maintain a clear path for all decisions.

Now for the next question, why is having a vision statement important for a company? A vision statement is extremely crucial because it is a clear demonstration of the passion of the company and how they want to improve and be successful. It also brings everyone together because it sets a common goal for the business and due to these things the team is led toward success.

However, trouble can arise when a company does not have a vision statement or it is unclear. When a vision statement is present, it creates a guideline that will help keep the mindset and outlook on track. This is similar to Lehi’s dream of the tree of life in the Book of Mormon, the goal was the tree of life and there was an iron rod to lead them straight to it without being lost in the darkness. Along with this darkness was the Great and Spacious Building that mocked those who followed the iron rod and tempted them with other worldly things. The goal for the company is the tree of life and the iron rod represents the vision statement because it keeps us going in the right direction and prevents us from falling away from our final destination/into darkness or giving into temptations. Those companies that lack a vision statement or have one that is relatively weak do not have that iron rod to help them along the way or they are easily lost and distracted by temptations such as money or new ideas that are nowhere near related to your company’s vision. If a company does not have a vision statement, decisions are easily made without thinking of the company’s future and how it will be affected by that choice. For example, if a company that sells furniture does not have a vision statement and a manufacturer makes a deal to sell their lawn mowers and they offer 3x the money the furniture manufacturers do, they might easily make that deal. This could cause a large drop in income because your sales in those lawn mowers are nowhere near related to your original gameplan.

Visions also help to create a culture of ethics. This is demonstrated by the fact that the company is built on the foundation of something strong and it keeps people in accordance to the vision statement. If the vision is a positive thing and they are passionate and successful then they will also attract those who are also passionate and successful about the company and it will only make the company’s relationships stronger as well. When a company has good relationships, they easily trust one another and can be more open and honest in their dealings because they all have similar mindsets. If a company has a vision it draws in those with the same or similar visions and it makes the company stronger and more successful.

An example of a vision statement is helping to adopt animals to better their lives and the lives of their owners.
